USA SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP REGIONAL ORGANIZATION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS RETURN FOR 2024

USA SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP REGIONAL ORGANIZATION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS RETURN OR 2024, FINALS TO RUN AT LOWERS
August 1, 2023

Hello surfers,

As registration for the 2023/2024 competition season opens for regional organizations,
we are sending a reminder that the past few year’s “COVID era” USA Surfing
Championships open registration policy has been discontinued.
Please read carefully, there are a few special rules that vary among the different
disciplines.

In order to qualify to surf in the 2024 USA Surfing Championship (USA Champs),
surfers must qualify via a regional organization (WSA, NSSA, ESA, TGSA, HSA) to earn
an invitation into next year’s USA Champs.

This applies to all surfers wishing to compete at USA Champs in

  • all ages Longboard
  • adult Shortboard
  • Para Surfing

SUP/SUP Surf/Prone USA Champs participation remains open.

Surfers must have completed a regional organization’s minimum number of required
2023/2024 events and qualified for the regional organization’s end of season
championship (West Coast Champs/WSA, Regionals/ESA, States/HSA,
Regionals/NSSA, TGSA Championship, etc) in order to receive an invitation to USA
Champs 2024.

To compete for an invitation to the 2024 USA Surfing Championship, please check
with your regional organization to determine their minimum season participation
requirements, unless otherwise specified below.

There will no longer be open/uninvited registration into USA Champs, with the
exception of Open Division SUP/SUP Surf/Prone Paddle and Open Division
Longboard.

Longboard Open Divisions (Open Men and Open Women) at USA Champs are
qualifiers for the ISA World Championship team as part of the Pan Am Games
qualification track. Therefore, Open Division Longboard entrants at USA Champs

must have qualified either via a regional organization or by having competed in WSL
Longboard event/s during the 2023/2024 season.

SUP/SUP Surf/Prone Paddle Open Divisions (Open Men and Open Women) at USA
Champs are direct qualifiers for ISA World Championship teams as part of the Pan
Am Games qualification track. Because USA Surfing does not currently pull from any
regional SUP organizations, all SUP/Sup Surf/Prone will remain open registration for
USA Champs 2024.

Adult Shortboard at USA Champs is not a direct qualifier for the ISA World
Championship team. As the only discipline currently included in the Olympics,
shortboard qualification for ISA, Pan Am and other Olympic delegation events
happens per ISA selection procedures (WSL ranking). Adult shortboarders wishing to
compete for the USA Surfing National Champion titles must qualify via regional
organizations.

Para Surfing at USA Champs is a direct qualifier for the ISA World Championship
team. Para surfers wishing to compete for USA Surfing National Champion titles and
spots on the USA Team for ISA Worlds, must qualify by participating in a minimum of
four (4) events during the 2023/2024 regular season. The four events may be a
combination of WSA, HSA, and PSL North American events. NOTE: Please check with
each regional organization for qualification requirements to surf in that organization’s
end of season championship (West Coast Champs/WSA, States/HSA, etc).

Participation in USA Champs does not require participation in a regional
organizations’ end of season championships, only a total of four regular season events
as noted above.

And, as always, USA Surfing Membership is required for entry into USA Champs.

Finals will be run at Lowers for 2024

NOTE: Para surfers who earn spots on the USA Team at Oceanside will earn an
invitation to surf a Para Surf Team demonstration heat at Lowers.

Have a great season! Hope to see you next June at USA Champs.
